THE BASICS OF WISDOM TEETH

Wisdom teeth typically arrive between the ages of 17 and 25. However, most people have them removed. Our team here at Midwest Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is happy to help you understand why you might want to do the same and how it might work.

Here are some reasons you may want to remove your wisdom teeth:

– They’re impacted. Since they are so far back in the mouth, they may become trapped in your jawbone or gums.
– They come in at the wrong angle, pressing in against your other teeth.
– Your mouth is too small, and you just don’t have enough room for two more teeth.
– You have cavities or gum disease. Wisdom teeth can be hard to reach when you brush and floss, so they are more prone to decay.

The surgery of removing your wisdom teeth shouldn’t take very long. You will receive anesthesia, and you can typically choose whether you want to be awake or not. Everyone has slightly different reactions to the surgery so it’s important to be prepared. Have someone there to take you home afterward. Keep soft foods and gel packs available for any swelling that may occur.
